The bully playground
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt
“Back in my day…” a phrase many parents use to explain to their children that they are living a much more privileged life than they did as a child. It is a saying used to describe a much more simplified way of life where smart phones and the internet were mere images of the imagination. However in some cases, “back in my day” can refer to a time of the past that society wishes they had never drifted from. For example, when today’s older generation were young students in school, bullying was not nearly as common of an occurrence as it is today. In today’s society, “approximately 160,000 teens reportedly skip school every day because of bullying, and 1 in 10 teens drop out of school due to repeated bullying.” (Connolly, 2014).
Although the issue of bullying continues to be a constant struggle, many
schools and organizations are in the process of taking it upon themselves to
put a stop to the hateful behavior. Schools were designed with the notion in mind that they would be a comfortable learning environment for all students, not a place of hate and crime. By putting the latest anti-bullying programs into practice, bullying will become a problem of the past, opening the gates to a much happier and safer future for all students.
